As one of the first of its kind, the Molecular Biology Graduate Program was formed in the late 1950's with the goal of providing a multi-disciplinary graduate training environment in the new area of molecular biology. Dr. Salvador Luria of MIT speculated that this new field was likely to become the core of modern biology and proposed that the University of Wisconsin create a Center of Molecular Biology to foster this research on campus and become a national leader.
